Some BIG tips before you go do this
  • Arrive in time to get enough seats so that you can all sit together
  • Arrive in time to actually to be able to get to a seat before “Mr Handel” starts instructing the audience
  • Arrive in time to buy a score OR buy/borrow one to take with you
It’s all very well-being part of a 2000 strong participating audience (minus 4 cos we didn’t have a score), and still absolutely marvellous to be in amongst hard-line Messiah chorists (yep they were just members of the audience – but this was not just any old audience – except for the four of us!), but it would have been good to have some clue as to what was going to happen next. Although I studied and sang exerts from “The Messiah” many times during school, I couldn’t quite access the information buried in the farthest corners of my mind  some 40 years on.
Having said all that, I wouldn’t have missed the experience for the world and will go along next year better prepared
Run each year by Tafelmusick Baroque orchestra and chamber choir (a not for profit organisation), the conductor Ivars Taurins  in the shape of Mr Handel – all dressed up and totally in character with the german accent and mannerisms –  was totally superb, Conducting an orchestra of professional musicians including soloists –  Christine Brandes, soprano;  Daniel Taylor, countertenor; Rufus Müller, tenor  and  Brett Polegato, baritone –  is one thing but also incorporating various sections of the audience split into altos, tenors etc, was an interesting exercise to watch. Scared the crap out of me when his voice burst through the audience chorus from the speaker nearby issuing instructions to the various sections. And all without a score of his own. Check this out for next year. It gets booked up very early. This year it ran on Sunday 19th December at 2pm at Massey Hall
